Chapter Seventeen

The man and woman in front of us seem familiar to me. So familiar to the point that I swear I know them. I don’t actually know them, I couldn’t tell you where I recognise them from, but there is a feeling inside of me that knows these people.

“Good evening,” Noah smiles. “Everett, Grace.” They don’t respond, too busy staring at me. whatever freaky connection we have, I know they feel it too.

“Lottie?” I turn to look at Caden, but my eyes don’t move from these people. Grace has long blonde hair with blue eyes. She’s taller than I am, but just as slim. Everett has bright green eyes and light, sandy coloured hair. They’re both about probably in their late forties, maybe even early fifties.

“Baby,” Noah exclaims, sounding exasperated. I turn to him, panicked. “Introduce yourself.” I don’t want to.

“Charlotte,” Grace whispers.

“Charlotte,” I confirm.

“What is going on?” Caden asks. “Lottie?”

“I don’t know,” I tell him.

“Are you struggling again?” Noah asks gently. I wish he wouldn’t mention my issues in front of two random strangers. Especially strangers eliciting this kind of response from me.

“Struggling?” Everett demands. His voice is deep and smooth. The sound instantly tugs at something inside me. “What is wrong with her?”

“Nothing that concerns you,” Caden replies. “Now I want to know what is going on. Do you three know each other?”

“No,” I whisper. Tears have filled my eyes. Shit. “Yes. I don’t know.”

“Yes,” Grace confirms.

“Let’s go inside,” Everett commands. The five of us enter the house, and he leads us into the kitchen.

“Lottie brought these for you,” Noah tells the couple. He hands over the wine, and Caden places the flowers on the table.

“Thank you,” Grace smiles. She seems nervous, worried. She’s not alone though, because I feel the same. “Do you want some wine?”

“I want to know why my mate seems so uncomfortable,” Caden hisses. Everett tenses, and I can tell this won’t end well if I don’t interfere. How I know this, I cannot tell you. I just do. I seem to be relying on instinct a lot lately. My instincts are always great though and rarely lead me wrong. It’s okay.

“I’m okay,” I reassure Caden. “Just a little off balance that’s all.” Grace pours us both a glass of red wine, despite Everett frowning at the glasses. You’re not my dad, you don’t get to judge my drinking habits.

“Like when River didn’t come home?” Noah frowns.

“River?” Grace asks. “How many mates do you have?”

“5,” Caden and Noah answer together.

“I have more than that,” I shrug. “Katie is a friend.”

“No,” Everett gasps. What is he so surprised about? Yet that freaky connection that sprung to life when we first met didn’t surprise him?

“Yes,” Caden confirms. “Now you fill in our blanks.”

“Lottie,” Grace murmurs. I ignore her. What does she want from me? She sighs and turns to my guys. “When you see Melinda, how do you feel?”

“Familiar,” Noah supplies. “Safe.”

“Kinship,” Caden adds. I know what she’s trying to imply, I’m not stupid, but I’m not entertaining it.
