Chapter Seventeen
The man and woman in front of us seem familiar to me. So familiar to the point that I swear I know them. I donât actually know them, I couldnât tell you where I recognise them from, but there is a feeling inside of me that knows these people.
âGood evening,â Noah smiles. âEverett, Grace.â They donât respond, too busy staring at me. whatever freaky connection we have, I know they feel it too.
âLottie?â I turn to look at Caden, but my eyes donât move from these people. Grace has long blonde hair with blue eyes. Sheâs taller than I am, but just as slim. Everett has bright green eyes and light, sandy coloured hair. Theyâre both about probably in their late forties, maybe even early fifties.
âBaby,â Noah exclaims, sounding exasperated. I turn to him, panicked. âIntroduce yourself.â I donât want to.
âCharlotte,â Grace whispers.
âCharlotte,â I confirm.
âWhat is going on?â Caden asks. âLottie?â
âI donât know,â I tell him.
âAre you struggling again?â Noah asks gently. I wish he wouldnât mention my issues in front of two random strangers. Especially strangers eliciting this kind of response from me.
âStruggling?â Everett demands. His voice is deep and smooth. The sound instantly tugs at something inside me. âWhat is wrong with her?â
âNothing that concerns you,â Caden replies. âNow I want to know what is going on. Do you three know each other?â
âNo,â I whisper. Tears have filled my eyes. Shit. âYes. I donât know.â
âYes,â Grace confirms.
âLetâs go inside,â Everett commands. The five of us enter the house, and he leads us into the kitchen.
âLottie brought these for you,â Noah tells the couple. He hands over the wine, and Caden places the flowers on the table.
âThank you,â Grace smiles. She seems nervous, worried. Sheâs not alone though, because I feel the same. âDo you want some wine?â
âI want to know why my mate seems so uncomfortable,â Caden hisses. Everett tenses, and I can tell this wonât end well if I donât interfere. How I know this, I cannot tell you. I just do. I seem to be relying on instinct a lot lately. My instincts are always great though and rarely lead me wrong. Itâs okay.
âIâm okay,â I reassure Caden. âJust a little off balance thatâs all.â Grace pours us both a glass of red wine, despite Everett frowning at the glasses. Youâre not my dad, you donât get to judge my drinking habits.
âLike when River didnât come home?â Noah frowns.
âRiver?â Grace asks. âHow many mates do you have?â
â5,â Caden and Noah answer together.
âI have more than that,â I shrug. âKatie is a friend.â
âNo,â Everett gasps. What is he so surprised about? Yet that freaky connection that sprung to life when we first met didnât surprise him?
âYes,â Caden confirms. âNow you fill in our blanks.â
âLottie,â Grace murmurs. I ignore her. What does she want from me? She sighs and turns to my guys. âWhen you see Melinda, how do you feel?â
âFamiliar,â Noah supplies. âSafe.â
âKinship,â Caden adds. I know what sheâs trying to imply, Iâm not stupid, but Iâm not entertaining it.
